Be Present

This picture has been with me for 8 years, a constant presence in my life. Every time I gaze upon it, I am drawn in. Each glance feels like an intimate invitation to embrace the moment fully. It is a reminder to be present, especially with my beloved, setting aside the distractions of the day. In the world of Franciscan spirituality, this practice of presence holds great significance. It centers around being receptive to God's love and presence through silent contemplation and solitude. It encourages a mindful engagement with others, prioritizing their needs over our own concerns. The teachings of St. Francis of Assisi urge us to be fully present not only to ourselves but also to those around us and the vast beauty of creation. This approach to spirituality combines contemplative reflection with proactive deeds, emphasizing the recognition of the divine in both the world and every individual encountered.

In those quiet moments of contemplation, at the end of each day, I seek comfort in the meaningful connections I cultivated with the individuals around me. I wonder about the influence of my actions and words today. Was I attentive and engaged sufficiently to recognize the subtle manifestations of God in the people I interacted with? Those familiar faces we cross paths with regularly, how did our encounters shape their day?

St. Francis’ mission was deeply rooted in the practice of being present. He exemplified this principle when he came face to face with the leper, demonstrating a profound commitment to the ministry of presence. For him, the essence lay not in the verbiage of one's speech, but rather in the simplicity of accompanying others through their respective journeys. Since God is present in every single creation, it is essential for us to seek and recognize the divine presence of God in the world around us and in the individuals we come across each day. Look around you, who today needs your complete attention? Who needs your presence?

This endeavor presents significant challenges. Following the teachings of St. Francis, I strive to emulate the divine qualities of God and seek His presence in all aspects of my life with unwavering determination.Through following in the footsteps of St. Francis, we should aspire to embody the image of Christ for everyone in every aspect of our lives.
