Desert Moments

“Always forward, never back.”

St. Junipero Serra

When we think of the desert, we often describe it as an arid, vast desolate place. But in actuality, during lent, the desert is a place we hope to be, not physically, but spiritually. If we enter the desert with our whole heart, it can be a place where we can be spiritually refreshed and nourished.

The Spirit led into the desert Jesus and spent 40 days praying and fasting. The devil even tempted him. Which can happen to us, the devil tries to divert us from moving forward by distracting us with guilt, unforgiving hearts, and the din of the world. These 40 days gives us an opportunity to focus on what’s coming, (new life) and unclutter what has been keeping us away from God. Are we spending too much time on the things that do not serve us?

Have we prioritized the wrong things? Where is God in all of this?

Use the desert moments as an opportunity to dig deep and ask yourself, how can I live out my Christian faith more devoutly. How can I grow closer to God? Not just for these 40 days but for my future. If you find yourself stuck in the sand and not knowing where to go, follow the advice of St. Fr. Mychal Judge:

“When I don’t know what’s next, I get down on my knees and pray, Lord, take me, show me what you want. Then I watch and listen, and it will come.”

Keep at it! Keep praying. Love the Lord.

Peace and Grace.
