Music for the Soul

"To sing is to pray twice.

St. Augustine

When I was growing up, I clearly remember the experience of making music cassette tapes filled with my favorite songs that I lifted directly off the radio. (Yes, I am definitely dating myself with that admission, I know!) One of my absolute favorite ways to pray has always been through music. Each day, I take a moment to thank God for this wonderful gift that enhances my life in so many ways. I feel truly grateful for the talented composers, writers, and artists who bring words to life in such a beautiful and melodic manner. I honestly can’t imagine a world without music. Can you?

Praising God through music and dance is certainly not a new concept. Take King David, for instance, the great conductor of the psalms, who called upon the singers and instrumentalists to accompany him as he brought the ark of God to its tent. He danced as though no one was watching, fully immersed in his act of praising God. And what about Jesus? I am sure he danced and sang at the wedding in Cana, celebrating the joy of the occasion. (Oh, to have been a fly on the wall for that one!) I can’t think of a better way to express our love and gratitude than through the joyful acts of song and dance.

Like me, I am sure you have a favorite hymn—a particular song that, just by hearing its beautiful melody, touches your soul in a profoundly meaningful way. For me, “How Great Thou Art” is that song that resonates deeply within my heart. I feel it reaching deep within me, and frequently, I find myself moved to tears with gratitude for all the wonderful things that my beloved has done and continues to do for me on this journey of life. A contemporary album that I truly love is called The Story. This remarkable album features music inspired by Scripture, taking listeners on a journey from creation all the way to revelation; it is a carefully curated compilation of songs by various contemporary Christian music artists. The beautiful songs are inspired by scripture passages found throughout the Bible. I created a Spotify playlist which includes a heartfelt list of my favorite traditional and contemporary songs that resonate deeply with my spirit for you, the link is below. Consider it my modern twist on a cassette tape, crafted just for you with love and care. Enjoy!

What are your favorite hymns? I would love to know.

Keep at it! Keep praying. Love the Lord.

Peace and Grace.
