Roads, Paths and Bridges- Oh My!

Ever since I was a teenager, I have always had a great fascination with roads, paths, and bridges. Whenever I encountered an opportunity, I would take pictures of these structures to look at later, cherishing the memories they held. Just as a book can transport you away to various places and times, these images did the same for me, allowing my imagination to soar. I would often find myself pondering where these roads might lead and what adventures awaited travelers along their course. It was a wonderful and necessary escape from the challenging reality of my childhood years, during which I was often bullied by classmates.

As I grew older, these captivating images took on a more spiritual significant path (pun intended). I began to use them as a form of imaginative prayer, a way to connect more deeply with my faith. If you recall an earlier post where I wrote about Visio Divina, you may remember that it is translated as “divine seeing.” This form of prayer is related to Lectio Divina, which means “divine reading." Visio Divina utilizes visual elements to help set your mind on prayer. It creates a space where God can communicate with your heart through the power of the image.

I use these particular images as my sacred meeting place with Jesus. Unlike the road to Emmaus, where the disciples were surprised and did not recognize Him until the breaking of the bread, I actively seek and recognize my beloved, finding comfort in His presence. It is during these contemplative walks that I engage in heartfelt conversations with Him. Although these roads and bridges may appear lonely and desolate visually, they are, for me, filled with countless untold stories, laughter, and even tears. It is on these roads that I repeatedly find solace and peace. Because while many of these conversations may be initiated by me, they never truly end. Whatever road or image I choose to follow, I feel assured that my beloved is right there walking beside me. I can genuinely affirm that sometimes my roads in life are curvy, winding, and occasionally treacherous, yet I am never afraid. If I keep my focus on Him, He remains right in front of me, and when I let go of my worries, there He is beside me, comforting and guiding me through every twist and turn.

I have included some of my favorite pictures, and I even took the time to include a watercolor painting that I created a few years ago, which holds special meaning for me. I actually painted my own little road as a personal meeting place for reflection and contemplation. Please enjoy these images, and feel free to use them during your prayer time or meditation.
